Deep Commentary

This verse was spoken at the Jetavana monastery regarding the Venerable Moggallana. During a visit to the heavenly realms, Moggallana encountered several deities possessing great power and radiance. Upon inquiry, he learned that their rebirth in these heavenly states was not the result of complex rituals or vast wealth, but rather the consequence of simple, consistent moral practices: speaking only the truth, restraining anger, and being generous even when one has little to give. Moggallana later confirmed these findings with the Buddha, who affirmed that these three modest actions are sufficient to lead a practitioner to a favorable rebirth among the gods. The story serves to demystify the path to spiritual merit, emphasizing that greatness is found in the integrity of everyday conduct. Rather than seeking external validation or practicing deceit to gain influence, the Buddha encourages the cultivation of an honest, calm, and generous heart, which in itself transforms the quality of one's consciousness and future destiny.
