Just as a solid rock is not shaken by the storm, even so the wise are not affected by praise or blame.

Deep Commentary

In this verse, the Buddha uses the metaphor of a solid mountain to represent the deep concentration and wisdom of the wise. A mountain stands firm against storms, just as a wise person remains unshakeable in the face of praise and blame. The wise are not swayed by the "eight worldly winds" (gain and loss, fame and disrepute, praise and blame, sorrow and happiness). We must reflect on our own practice: are we easily uprooted by a single word of criticism? To withstand these winds, we must cultivate deep concentration (Samadhi) and wisdom (Prajna). Wisdom allows us to see the true nature of all phenomena as empty and impermanent. By maintaining mindfulness, we guard our minds like a vigilant sentry protecting a fortress. If we are careless, we let the thieves of defilements invade and steal our spiritual wealth.
