Deep Commentary
The Buddha delivered this verse at the Jetavana Monastery to an elderly man whose sons were devout Buddhists but who himself lacked spiritual faith. His own father had been a cruel butcher who faced immediate karmic retribution and fell into the Avici hell. Seeking to save their father, the children invited the Buddha for an alms offering. The Buddha admonished the old man to urgently build an island of refuge for himself, to be wise, and to purify his mind. Upon hearing this, the old man attained the first stage of enlightenment (Sotapanna). In Verse 236, the Buddha emphasizes creating an 'island of safety' through one's own diligent effort, without relying on external entities. This island represents mental cultivation and meditative concentration (Samadhi). To establish it, one must cleanse all mental defilements. By maintaining mindfulness and advancing to right concentration, a practitioner purifies their mind and ultimately ascends to the Pure Abodes (Suddhavasa), the celestial realms of the Non-Returners (Anagamis).
