Deep Commentary

This verse uses the beautiful and familiar image of a lotus, deeply symbolic in Buddhism. The lotus represents a pure mind and the Buddhist spirit of engaging with the world while transcending it. Although it grows from foul mud, it remains unstained and fragrant. The Buddha uses this to symbolize practitioners who attain liberation. Before awakening, all are ordinary beings filled with ignorance and desire. The Buddha himself was once an ordinary human, a prince living in luxury, yet he realized the suffering of life and renounced his worldly status to seek a path of liberation. He achieved this on Earth, proving that the potential for Buddhahood exists within us all. Buddhism is practical, grounded in reality, and emphasizes that pure awakening arises from within the impurities of the world, just as a lotus rises from the mud. True liberation is finding the pure mind amid daily life, not escaping to a distant realm.
