Deep Commentary

The Buddha cited Lord Indra (Sakra) to illustrate the result of heedfulness. Indra became the king of the Tavatimsa heaven (the heaven of the Thirty-Three) by diligently practicing and cultivating merit. Next, the Buddha draws a clear contrast between a heedless person and a heedful one. The heedful are always praised, while the heedless are always despised. A person who works diligently to elevate themselves not only benefits personally but also brings practical benefits to others. When given a responsibility, they work quietly and tirelessly to serve the community, finding joy in doing so. Even if they face reprimand for a minor mistake, they do not lose heart; instead, they learn and improve. They may face slander from subordinates, but they never step back. They do not care about praise or blame, reward or punishment—as long as they can help others, they are satisfied. Such individuals are truly respectable. Their patience and resilience guarantee progress on the spiritual path. If we wish to improve and have an unselfish, altruistic heart, we should follow their noble example. We must eliminate narrow-mindedness, jealousy, and envy, for these are toxic viruses that destroy our lives. No one, neither in the spiritual community nor in worldly life, favors a selfish person.
